All matter is made up of atoms, and water is no exception. To shape molecules, atoms bond or fuse together. To model a water molecule, two hydrogen atoms must bond to a single oxygen atom. This translates to the chemical composition of H2O. Water is an extremely unique substance because of its many special properties, the process of structuring a water molecule, and how they all work together. When a single oxygen atom is bonded by two hydrogen atoms at its top, the molecule resembles Mickey Mouse's ears (hydrogen atoms) and face (oxygen). A covalent bond with electrons that do not share equally, is a molecule identified as polar. This Mickey Mouse shape of the water molecule provides polarity. It means that overall the water molecules are neutral, but at the same time one end has a negative charge while the other end has a positive charge. The oxygen side is negatively charged, while the hydrogen side is positively charged. The south poles attracted to the north poles in a magnet (two opposites), is very similar to how opposites attract in a water molecule; the negative side is attracted to the positive side of another molecule. Caused by the polarity of water is the “viscosity” that connects molecules, also known as cohesion. The result of the polarity of water is the property of cohesion; which is responsible for water's ability to merge with itself effortlessly. Another property resulting from this is that of adhesion, which indicates the strong ability of water to stick to other things; therefore on external details the water extends in a thin layer. Instead of merging into a clump, the water expands. Therefore, the cohesive forces are overwhelmed by the adhesive ones, after there has been an interaction between the water and the...... center of the paper ...... thin structure that is incredibly "open" and denser than the liquid state. Thus, the water expands as it freezes. For this reason ice has the ability to float. As for the situation where water behaves like most liquids, it would end up with ecosystem-changing results. However, all forms of underwater life would die in any freezable body of water; which would be frozen solid from the bottom up. Therefore, the property of water to allow ice to float is crucial to the life of underwater ecosystems, as well as their survival here on planet Earth. All aspects of life on earth are influenced by water. In the absence of water the planet would not only look completely different, but animals would not have oxygen to breathe and plants would not even exist. To preserve the health of the environment and humans, water is an essential resource.
