Throughout the late 19th century and early 20th century, nearly all countries in Africa were imperialized by other countries in Europe. To imperialize means to conquer another country, whether by means of politics, economics and/or culture, and control that land. The consequences for the imperialized country were beneficial or harmful. The amount of African countries imperialized by a European country varied. Britain imperialized fifteen countries in Africa, including Egypt in 1882, Sierra Leone in 1808, and the Union of South Africa in 1910. Although Britain's reasons for imperializing were selfish, Britain helped each country to progress later. Britain was busy imperializing countries which benefited them. Benjamin Disraeli, the British Prime Minister during the 1870s, convinced Britain to imperialize because it was a way to protect Britain's vital overseas markets, resources and jobs, as well as bolstering their well-known reputation as the most powerful country (Butler) . Britain wanted to spread its culture and religion (Butler). As a result, Christianity was dispersed throughout the imperialized countries under the name of Great Britain. Another important reason why Britain imperialized in Africa was because other European countries participated in the “Scramble for Africa” (Berard). This was the period when some European countries fought over which African countries to imperialize. Britain wanted more power and, therefore, more land. Therefore they resorted to imperializing lands such as those in Africa. Egypt appealed to Britain for several reasons and was imperialized in 1882. Egypt was rich in ivory, gold and spices (Berardo).
