Topic > Family Development Theory - 2534

(Jeter, 2016) This theory places particular emphasis on how time influences the changes we see in families. Family development centers on the presence of children and changes in family stages are determined by the eldest child. Some important aspects of this theory are roles and norms. Families with launch centers or parents who just sent their first child to college experience many changes during this time. Parents' norms are changing because the child they raised and cared for now becomes their independent adult. As previously mentioned, parents modify their disciplinary norms to accommodate the new dangers their children face when they go to college. Student norms also change. They will most likely experience much more freedom than when they were in elementary school and living with their parents. The curfew could be lifted, citizens could have greater financial freedom and freedom to make their own decisions without having to obtain permission. This new freedom can be daunting for some, while others definitely take advantage of it and can find themselves in dangerous situations
