The roles of nurses have expanded to support research and development in their fields. It was during this period that doctors and nurses, through experience, also demonstrated that blood could be stored and then transferred safely from patient to patient saving the lives of countless soldiers. Some of the progress made had a direct effect on those at home, especially children and mothers. Inspection of refugees and conscripts highlighted poor health habits which led to progress to improve health nutrition and control conditions such as scabies. Nurses' roles also became more critical during wartime. From 4 July 1943 special military training was also imposed on nurses. This included not only additional training in psychiatry and anesthesia, but also physical conditioning to develop endurance. They also looked at training on how to organize medical care in the field
