Bellamy began his career as a journalist but later married and decided to devote his efforts to writing novels of narrative. Looking Back was published and Bellamy became famous. The book sparked interest across the country and led people to imagine a world like the one Bellamy created in his book. The idea of a utopia like the one he describes is incredible. His book is what people, even now in the twenty-first century, wish the world could be. However, Bellamy's world in which he reasoned and judged people based on internal beliefs was not what people do then or now. Bellamy's book showed a world of rationality applied to create a world of decidedly good and generous people. If rationality were used to create a healthy society with a warlike heart, the picture imagined by Bellamy would be true today. Bellamy built his utopia on the position that individuals are not in competition with each other. The story begins with a preface that explains the sum of the story. The story introduces the fact that Bellamy writes as if it is already the twentieth century and the world is looked at through rationality.
