In her article, Bearers of Hope, Julie Landsman (2006) examines the tools and techniques educators need to be successful when teaching children students living in poor conditions. The number of students living at or below the poverty line is increasing. These students do not have access to resources that other children may be able to obtain. Because of this factor, people seem to place limitations on students who have no control over the circumstances in which they have been placed. These children are capable of learning and succeeding. Teachers must believe in the potential of their students and adapt to each student's situation. Landsman found that successful teachers expected the same amount of effort and success from all students. Those teachers were very in tune with each student. They were aware of the student's environment and the adjustments that needed to be made to give students the chance to succeed.
