Topic > Ethical Judgment - 1293

Who sets the ethical limits that prevail in our society? Is every individual responsible for their own actions even if their morals may be different from those of others? Ethical judgments are made separately for each individual and some of them are based on one's emotions or reason. There are many factors that influence ethical judgments in a society or culture. In my essay I will use reason and emotion as ways of knowing, because I believe that to make an ethical judgment in both the natural sciences and the arts, a person's emotion and reason play a role. The discovery of new knowledge in natural sciences mostly happens with controlled experiments, while artists can express their knowledge differently with images, sculptures, films... In both fields of knowledge ethics cannot be excluded. Art has more freedom to express itself without receiving negative feedback from viewers or society, while a natural scientist must be aware of many ethical limitations for his experiment to be ethically acceptable. My thesis is that ethical judgments limit the methods available in the production of knowledge in the arts and natural sciences, but the limits are more severe when it comes to conducting experiments than creating works of art. Ideally, an objective view should be taken when evaluating this statement, but our emotions can be obstacles to ethical judgments. First of all, we must consider that if there were no experiments conducted with modern medicine that achieved something that was previously unimaginable, there would not be any great progress in medicine. Experiments to create, test, and improve that medicine have been conducted in ways that may be ethically questionable.
