Disney's success continued in adapting the hit animated film into a theatrical phenomenon. Last week I finally got around to seeing the musical version of The Lion King and the first words that come to mind are: "fantastic", "stunning" and "incredible!" My expectations were met, as my eyes widened with the bright, colorful lights, breathtaking costumes and superb music of the first scene. At first I was a little uncertain, wondering how Disney would manage to put a film with non-human characters, and animated ones at that, on a three-dimensional stage. Disney never ceases to amaze me. The Lion King was one of many impressive displays of an elaborate musical production that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. The Lion King is the story of Simba, the son of the Lion King Mufasa (Rufus Bonds, Jr.). The birth of the new heir replaces the king's brother Scar (John Vickery), leading the envious Scar to plot the deaths of Mufasa and Simba. When Mufasa is killed while trying to save Simba, Scar convinces Simba that he must go into exile. There, Simba befriends a meerkat, Timon (Danny Rutigliano) and a warthog, Pumbaa (Bob Bouchard), and grows to adulthood (adult voice by Matthew Broderick) blissfully free of responsibility. However, when childhood friend Nala (Moe Daniels) coincidentally finds Simba and informs him that Scar is destroying the pack's land, Simba must decide whether to keep his distance or face his demons... and Scar....
