Ferguson and Cheryl K. Olsen discuss whether or not children with pre-mental illnesses might be affected when exposed to video games, especially violent video games. In this study, 377 children suffering from any type of mental illness were involved to see if violent video games would be influenced by them, causing them to become delinquents and have any type of violent behavior. This study was linked to the 1999 Columbine shooting, where the perpetrators of the mass shooting were exposed to video games before the incident to gain ideas (Ferguson, Olson, 2014). While the study did not support their hypothesis that violent video games do not cause greater effects on those suffering from pre-mental illnesses, they did find that aggression occurs after being exposed. Violent video games are being exposed to children of this generation more than ever. It makes children believe that what they see is the right thing to do. Conflict theory is primarily involved in this article because video games can expose children to becoming something they are not and also cause problems with others around them. Symbolic interactionism also plays a role in this article, linking back to the Columbine situation where mass murders created hatred towards their classmates causing them not to interact.
