The Romans used both scientific and mythological methods in their medicine. Adopting the methods of Greek medicine; the Romans gained a solid base. They copied Hippocrates, who separated the study of medicine from philosophy and had a comprehensive approach to the health of human beings. Hippocrates also observed the habits and environment of humans to accurately determine diseases and discover treatments. The Romans adapted the Hippocratic method and combined it with mythical and religious views. The Romans used Greek methods and also included prayers and offerings to the gods. Although all gods had healing powers, Aesculapius, the god of healing, was the most important. Unlike today, doctors in ancient Rome received no respect, because they were considered frauds. This reputation was caused by the doctor's magic tricks and the lack of useful cures. The job required minimal training, as they only had to apprentice under their senior. Therefore, many free slaves and people who had failed in everything else took up this profession. Some have tried to find new remedies; however, others used the medicine to scam people. Public surgeries were performed to attract the public as advertisements. Doctors would even become beauticians providing perfumes, cosmetics and even hairdressers. When wives wanted their husbands to go away, they would say, "put the patient out of his suffering" and the doctors would be the killers.
