In describing his daily career the narrator Casi says “The puppeteer pulling the strings from behind the bench was a pink puffy on loan from the Bronx. The plaque directly in front of him announced J. Manos in calligraphic gold” (De La Pava 2). Using the author's description one might imagine a circus or production. As a result, De La Pava says the legal system is a big circus all for show. Metaphorically the author compares the legal system to a circus. He is saying that the justice system is just a big show or production. By definition, a circus is “a large public spectacle, typically presented in one or more very large tents or in an outdoor or indoor arena, featuring displays of pageantry, feats of skill and daring, animal displays, etc.” Essentially the legal system is a form of entertainment used to provide attention or entertainment to the matter and judges and lawyers are the show animals paraded around. The legal system is designed to evaluate people for the crimes they are accused of and to bring justice to victims. But it has become a publicized issue where abuses of power occur. Furthermore, A Naked Singularity paints a picture of how the system works. He states: “How you needed cops to do this and how their master, the System, needed to be constantly fed former people in order to function properly so that in a typical year the city where the following events occurred around half a million of corpses were forcibly conscripted” (De La Pava 2). The image of the bodies illustrates precisely how prisoners are treated not as human beings but as “bodies” or physical structures Calling the System “master” of the De La policemen Pava compares the system as a whole to a greedy being that constantly needs “bodies” to strengthen itself.
