The Impressionist movement in Europe, particularly in Paris, was thriving in the mid-to-late 19th century. The new artistic styles were despised and rejected time and again by the conservatives of the time. Even Emperor Napoleon III of France shied away from these new ideas. After being rejected countless times for other jobs, Van Gogh realized that art was his calling and began researching other artists and various works of art.
