Another form of irony is in line 21 with "my merry men", which would suggest that they are happy. However, this is most likely not the case considering the dangers of the job, the men would likely be very angry or unhappy at having to rush to their deaths. In line 22, "guid schip" is used, meaning good ship, but no ship during this time period could withstand the enormous storm they were sailing through. In lines 23 and 24 one of the sailors speaks, hoping that Sir Patrick Spence will change his mind about the voyage. His attempts are in vain Sir Patrick Spence has received orders from the king and must carry them out. Line 24 is the first line that shows that they are sailing in a storm.
