In today's culture, one of the fastest ways to communicate with others is through text messaging. Text messages are a form of electronic messages sent from one cell phone to another minimizing the waiting time for sending and receiving. Over time text messages have developed into their own writing system. From the use of spelling, grammar to unregulated space in the spelling regime, text messaging has created a distinctive linguistic identity. This text discourse also known as “SMS Langauge” has made linguists eager to observe what they consider “the greatest linguistic revolution ever” (Kumar, “A Linguistic Study Of Abbreviations In SMS”). Text messages have many underlying meanings composed in its language, from being its own written form to being an expression of the users of the text. Due to the rapid popularity and addictions caused by SMS, linguists are studying whether SMS language affects students' literacy in language skills. Text messaging has a history before becoming one of the fastest ways of communication through the written form. When you needed to send a message to someone in the early days, the only way to do it was via a handwritten letter sent via carrier pigeon. Like generations past, these handwritten letters sealed with a stamp in an envelope were still sent but sent via the post office. It wasn't until 1969, with the creation of the first Internet, that a faster way to send a message was created (Bellis, “The History of Communication”). When the Internet was created, email was invented and that's when you could send letters over the Internet and get to the recipient's computer almost instantly. You didn't need paper...half paper...to have conversations with friends, family, and even acquaintances. Texting seems to be considered informal, so many users take advantage of this mentality and use it as a way of expressing themselves. For example, someone can message naturally using many emoticons showing that they like to be animated or have an animated personality. For example, this person likes to use emoticons to emphasize his emotions and excitement. Using pictures, the five characteristics of abbreviations, and placing letters in words is a way to express and exaggerate emotions in written form. It's a method of showing more that you're invested in the conversation you're having with someone with emotion and personality in text messages. Especially in today's texting culture, people expect abbreviations and emoticons in text messages because they are part of texting jargon.
