Literature Review The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines hand hygiene as “a general term that applies to routine hand washing, antiseptic hand washing, antiseptic handrub, or Surgical hand antisepsis. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013) The idea of ​​hand washing has been around for centuries. Ignaz Semmelweis established that hospital-acquired diseases were transmitted through hands. hands of healthcare workers. After observing doctors and healthcare workers in obstetric settings and studying mortality rates, Semmelweis recommended washing hands in a chlorinated lime solution before coming into contact with each patient Semmelweis's birth-related mortality dropped from 7% to 3%. Although Semmelwei's observations and recommendations were significant, fellow doctors and colleagues did not adopt them. The 1980s represented a crucial period for healthcare in the sense of hand hygiene. It was then that the first national hand hygiene guidelines were published in the 1980s.
