Topic > Year-round schooling: a simple solution for today's needs...

The summer break should be a time of rest and rejuvenation for students. After nine months of hard work and challenging lessons, you might think that such a long break would do nothing but good for students; however, this is not the best way for young minds to learn. A three-month break is too long for children to live without proper education and supervision. Instead of a long three-month break at the end of each school year, why not give students the same number of days off but spread them out more frequently throughout the year? Year-round education is a more efficient, globally competitive, and equitable alternative to the traditional nine-month school year. The reasons for a three-month summer break are outdated and provide no functional benefit to today's student. The current nine-month school year with three months of summer vacation is unnecessary in today's society. Today it is estimated that only 3% of the population is engaged in agriculture (Kralovec 32). The nine-month school year was originally supposed to allow more child laborers to attend school, but, with current child labor laws, this has become obsolete (O'Sullivan 398). The move to an annual program is simple and straightforward, but leaders are delaying only because the change would cause disruption among those who like the program as it is (French 28).
