The relationship between government and business in the United StatesThe government's position is to ensure that citizens are not harmed by commercial operations, such as the sale of contaminated food or the preparation of food in unsanitary conditions, causing ecological harm or acting unscrupulously in financial matters. As government has grown, regulation, taxation, and government spending have been beneficial to business (Carney, 2006). Businesses prefer that the government eliminate regulations and government watchdogs so they can continue to operate in a way that increases their profits. Most business leaders believe that government is overly involved in how businesses operate. A survey conducted in 2005 found that 90% of Americans believe that big business has a great deal of influence on government. CEOs of large corporations may have personal meetings with senators and cabinet secretaries to discuss their position and influence their decision making (Carney, 2006). Since the Obama administration, the government has interacted directly with businesses to ensure they are fiscally responsible so as not to negatively impact American citizens. President Obama had to intervene on behalf of Wall Street, auto companies and the banking sector through a stimulus package to avoid an economic depression in the country. Both business and government must work together to ensure that citizens receive maximum protection in all matters, including health and safety, defense, economy and environmental protection.
