Violence in the media and its effects on society"It was a scene straight out of the Oscar-winning American Beauty"This quote sums up my view on the media. It's a quote from a magazine article about Kristin Rossum and her husband's murder. The media is a source of communication. It includes television, cinema, video, radio, newspapers, etc. It's inevitable. The media plays an important role in society; it defines your life and the way you think. I will demonstrate this by analyzing case studies I have done on films and magazine articles. The aspects I will discuss to represent the role the media plays in promoting violence within society are the way the media presents violence, the way the public responds to violence, other factors that contribute to violence in society , my case studies and what they have shown and finally how the media the media protects society. The media presents violence in many ways. I will explain these ways by analyzing two of my contrasting case studies as examples. There are many different narrative contexts that media must take into consideration. They are the fictional setting, the involvement of the characters, the form of violence and the physical setting. The fictional setting is the type of show or movie. My case study examples are Beauty and the Beast, which is a cartoon, and Enemy at the Gates, which is a historical film. There are many other fictional settings, such as British crime films, western films/TV series, science fiction, comedies, romance and thrillers. The character's involvement is who is committing the crime and who is experiencing the violence, for example the character's involvement in one. of the Beauty and the Beast scenes are a beast and a male (Gaston). The characters involved in Enemy at the Gates are German soldiers and the Soviet Union. The form of violence is the type of violence used. Some examples of types of violence are shooting, stabbing, shooting, fighting, and physical violence. In Beauty and the Beast the violence is predominantly physical
