Culture has a huge influence on how people view and deal with psychological disorders. Being able to successfully treat someone for a mental illness largely has to do with what they consider normal in their culture. In Western cultures we think that going to a psychologist to talk about our emotions or individual problems and/or getting some kind of medication to help us with our mental illness is the best way to overcome and cure it, but in other cultures this may not be be the case. In particular, Western and Asian cultures differ in how they deal with psychological disorders. In this article I will discuss how Asian and Western cultures are similar and different in how they view psychological disorders, treatments and the likelihood of receiving treatment, culture-related disorders, and how to overcome differences in cultures for optimal treatments. .Asian cultures make up a large part of the world's population, so it is important to be able to understand their ways of dealing with psychological disorders. The way most Asian cultures view mental illness is very different from how Western cultures view mental illness. In one study it was shown that “Asian Americans show stronger implicit stigma about mental illness than Caucasian Americans” (Cheon & Chiao, 2012). One reason is that Asian cultures are more likely to attribute mental illness to some type of supernatural cause. This might include punishment from God or ancestors who dislike them with bad behavior or they might believe that mental illness could be the result of possession by an evil spirit. These types of beliefs lead to a stronger stigma against mental illness in Asian cultures. Since they believe it may be caused by... middle of the paper......ge of all their treatment options. Another very important thing that can be done is to educate mental health professionals about different aspects of Asian culture. Being aware of how Asians view and how they have traditionally treated mental illnesses is extremely important for treating people from Asian cultures. Finally, being open to using modern counseling and drug therapies with traditional treatment methods is a great way to overcome challenges in treating Asians. In conclusion, Asian and Western cultures have very different ways of viewing and dealing with psychological disorders. Both have their own way of seeing mental illness, of treating it, there are culture-bound syndromes and, most importantly, there are ways that can help overcome these differences to help people with psychological disorders in the best possible way..
