Topic > Mental Health Disparities Essay - 831

Mental health poverty prevents patients from seeking medical attention due to lack of insurance. “Disparities in insurance coverage make mental health care less accessible than other forms of health care” (Safran, 2011). Due to the lack of insurance, patients do not receive adequate care, such as being evaluated, receiving appropriate treatments, and not visiting the doctor for appointments to ensure adequate care. Without receiving proper treatment, the patient's condition may worsen and they would have no chance of a positive outcome. Additionally, poverty can cause additional stress and anxiety by progressing mental illness. “The stress of living with someone who has a mental health problem can be especially pronounced for families living in resource-poor areas where treatment options, accurate information and social support may be limited.” (Bischoff, 2017). Lack of attention is another health disparity, due to lack of attention, funding sources to help patients with mental health issues are limited. Because there is a lack of funding, these people are not receiving the adequate help they need. Additionally, because mental health lacks attention and funding, mental health institutions are limited, so people who need to be institutionalized may have to be moved to another city/state. We must do our best to provide all resources to our patients
