Before dying in a mental hospital due to syphilis contracted in his early twenties, Maupassant left the world with important works such as Una vita (1883), Le Sorelle Rondoli (1884) and Le Horla (1887). In 1884 Maupassant published one of his greatest stories: The Necklace.
