The man is conflicted and goes back and forth between "the photo of his wife and the original photo of Beth blindfolded" (Gaitskill 188). He can't decide what he wants more, but he soon starts to think he might have the best of both worlds. The man is very dominant and really has one purpose for Beth and that is to have a masochistic relationship with her. However, Beth wants more and is fine with that relationship as long as she gets the love she wants out of it. At first Beth was afraid of this man and once again I see the woman doing what the man wants to try to get what she wants. Beth at the beginning of her relationship with this man says, "I'm afraid of you."
