Throughout 1984 so far, the reader has seen many unlikely traits that Winston possesses. Some of these traits include being abusive, judgmental, and condescending. Despite having those traits, Julia still chose Winston over the rest of the party members. Winston spent much of the book contradicting the Party and doing things behind its back. Winston is also similar to Julia in that they both have a strong dislike for the Party. Although Winston has many unlikable traits, Julia chose him because he is a rebel and hates the Party. Julia is young and could get information about the past from Winston if she wanted. Julia is not very old and does not remember many of the events that happened in the past. People of Julia's age or younger are bound to be easily influenced by the party. Julia has no way to validate information about her past because her grandfather, the only family member she had, disappeared when she was eight. Although Julia is young, she remembers some details from the past such as a nursery rhyme she and her grandfather used to recite. Julia couldn't care less about the past, but if she was looking for information she could have asked Winston. Winston has also reviewed some historical articles and can confirm or deny what the party has tried to hide. One of the things Julia was curious about were lemons and Winston was able to tell her about them. Although Winston is about 13 years older than Julia, he can still provide her with information about the past. Throughout the book Winston spent his time rebelling against the party. Winston purchased items from black market shops such as his paperweight and the diary he writes in. Winston also doesn't believe everything he's told because of... middle of paper... pes. Winston is experiencing something completely new to him. Since Winston has not had any experience like the one with Julia, he thinks he is in love. Since Julia and Winston both work at the Ministry of Truth, they could gain and share information about the party and create their own Brotherhood. I also believe that Winston and Julia are only together to satisfy their sexual needs. Although Winston and Julia have some things in common, it doesn't mean they are in love. Julia and Winston would be better off as friends than lovers. Although Winston has some terrible traits, Julia has chosen to overlook them. Julia may have favored Winston over the other Party members because they both dislike the Party and are rebellious. Although Julia and Winston have spent time together, they are not in love. Ultimately the reader may never truly know Julia's reasons for choosing Winston.
