In Great Expectations Charles Dickens writes: You and I are not two figures to be together in London; nor anywhere else but what is private, known and understood among friends. (223)At the beginning of the novel, Pip was a somewhat fearful boy, scared of many things, as all small children are. But, ironically, she meets a rather significant man. Meet this man, an escaped convict, in the local swamps near the military barracks. This unusual man, Magwitch, provides Pip with his mysterious financial situation. After Pip helps Magwitch, he returns home to his sister, Mrs. Joe, also his mother figure, and Joe, his sister's husband and his father figure. Mrs. Joe has a rather rough personality, while Joe cares deeply for Pip. This creates a strong bond between the two, almost like a true father-son bond. It creates a bond that is difficult for Pip to break when he is called to his "great expectations", which Joe ultimately makes it easier for Pip to follow his separate and legitimate path in life. Pips's relationships with others show he is a compassionate person. Magwitch, Pip's financier, acts almost like a guardian angel to Pip. Pip, almost certain that Miss Havisham is the reason for his new and wonderful life, discovers that Magwitch, the convict he helped so long ago, is the reason for his sudden and mysterious fortunes. Whenever Pip fell into debt, Magwitch knew about it and saved him and put him back on his feet. No one ever suspected that an inmate would be the reason for Pips' success in life, which makes it difficult for Pip and Magwitch to start a strong relationship because they have only known each other for a few days. The reason Magwitch made Pips' life so much easier may have been that... middle of paper... about Pip, because once Pips' "great expectations" arrive, he is reluctant to leave Joe, perhaps forever. Joe, even though he cares and will miss Pip dearly, gives him an extra push that allows him to let go and face his "great expectations". Fortunately, Pip reunites with Joe and lives a happy life. The relationships Pip took part in made him stronger mentally and emotionally. However, he learned an important lesson: no matter what happens, life goes on. Whatever suspense he went through wondering who his financier had been all along, he lived it. Whatever torture Estella had subjected him to in Satis' House, life continued anyway. And even when he prepared for his “great expectations,” leaving Joe in the process, he made it. The key to having a good relationship is to trust the other person and everything will be fine.
