“The Great Atlantic and Pacific Company of Canada is committed to providing both employees and customers with a safe and healthy working and shopping environment. All reasonable efforts will be made to eliminate dangerous conditions and unsafe practices from the workplace.” We will examine how Dominion takes precautions to protect workers, provides information, instructions and supervision to workers to protect their health and safety, and how it alerts workers to potential or actual workplace hazards and how to address them. We will also review the actions taken in the event of an incident, as well as the audits and inspections needed to protect and remediate areas of the business. Taking precautions in certain circumstances to protect a worker can be achieved in many different ways. For example, Dominion provides butchers with metal gloves and aprons to protect them from a knife slipping and cutting them. They also provide the photo lab with protective glasses, a splash-proof apron, and plastic gloves to protect them from spilling dangerous chemicals that could cause serious damage to the skin or eyes. To protect workers and customers, wet floor signs are provided to warn people to walk carefully. Employees are provided with clip-on ties, which is a precautionary measure taken so we don't get strangled if our ties get caught. Each department has an eyewash station and first aid kit provided so that attention can be paid to an injury to prevent further damage. Taking precautions helps minimize accidents and protects the employer because the equipment is provided and therefore should be used, and if the equipment is not used and training has not been provided, the employee is at fault. Employees are provided with information, instruction and supervision to protect their health and safety. Some examples include the signs posted in our dining room and on our departments to keep us informed and remind us of the correct way to lift heavy objects, correct standing posture and exercises that can be performed to reduce injuries. We are also provided WHIMS, food handling and cooking training to protect our employees and customers. WHIMS training is aimed at employees in our photographic laboratory who deal with the chemicals present in the camera. The fool who handles and cooks training... middle of paper... does not recognize some of the actions taken by employees that could be dangerous. For example, our grocery department will stay on our product trucks so they can reach the top shelf. They will also move around the island so you don't have to get up and down a stool. I find this to be very dangerous and our store manager says nothing to these employees, nor does our health and safety committee. This type of action should not be allowed and there should be consequences if you are caught using trucks in such a circumstance. Management doesn't take health and safety seriously until head office comes into the store and this really affects how others view the issue. If the manager doesn't participate to make sure employees follow the correct procedure, how can the health and safety committee enforce things? We are a very clean store and this is due to audits and inspections. If it weren't for these controls I could see our store falling into a bad situation. It is reassuring that there is responsibility placed on the manager in the.
