Belonging comes from an understanding, or awareness, that an external sense of being derives from an internal sense of connection and security. To have a sense of belonging one must first have and understand what belonging is and there should be an internal connection between them and the place they belong to. This critical analysis will reveal how the film “August Rush,” directed by Kirsten Sheridan, relates to the concept of belonging. August Rush is a dramatic story with fairytale elements. August Rush has been separated from his parents since birth and is determined to find them again. He believes that if he plays music his parents will hear him and find him. August experiences a constant sense of belonging to his music and through this he belongs to his parents. August finds difficulties and trials when trying to belong to certain situations he faces. “I believe in music the same way some people believe in fairy tales.” "Listening to Music" is the opening scene of the film. August is at peace with music and his surroundings. This is indicated by the sweet and delicate music and the nature that surrounds him. This is where August believes he belongs. He longs to be in a place where he can be completely surrounded by music. During this scene August narrates, expressing his feelings and opinions on music. Narrative style is subjective. It's a personal and opinionated response. It describes what music is, where it comes from, and how it makes you feel. “Music is everywhere; all you have to do is listen. August is attracted to music. It surrounds him. It belongs to music. “Listen to the music. I feel it… it's all around us.” Membership can be a choice. “All you have to do is open your…half of the paper…Lyla's face and then blend in the close-up of Louis' face who is staring at Lyla. They haven't seen each other for more than ten years. There is a great sense of joy and belonging at the end of the show, all three looking at each other with an awareness of who they are. They haven't said anything to each other, yet they know who they are. Augusts' sense of belonging came from the internal connection he had with music. He knew that if he played the music his parents would find him, and that's what happened. August went through trials and struggles, but he chose where he belonged and this is what ultimately saved him from disaster. August and his parents had a shared interest in music and this ultimately brought them together and bonded their sense of belonging. If you believe in something and try hard enough, you will achieve your goal. Works CitedAugust Rush
