Topic > Essay on the junior doctors' strike - 1264

The junior doctors' strike happened because the Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt went against the action plan on new contracts. Several operations and patient treatments are carried out every day, but due to the strike the number of operations has decreased due to cancellations with 5,000 operations canceled in February 2016 and 7,000 operations canceled between 6 and 8 April 2016. February 2016 19,000 treatments were delayed until further notice because there were not enough doctors to provide care to patients. Surgeries were also affected by the junior doctors' strike because not all senior doctors and nurses were available to cover all appointments for junior doctors. While junior doctors are on strike, senior doctors have to make sure that patients on the wards get the right care and that they get the correct medicines and the right dose to cure their illness. In some departments this is proving difficult because between 6 and 8 April 2016 there was no accident cover and emergency and high dependency units due to the junior doctors' strike, so patients were not receiving adequate services and care. This is the period when hospitals had a high rate of admissions, but even though the junior doctors were all on strike, some of them could be recalled if the pressure on other doctors became too great.
