Texts without these elements can cause misunderstandings about the tone of the conversation. Having exaggerations of punctuation, abbreviations and animated images gives confirmation to the recipient that the conversation has a friendly and casual tone. People tend to misinterpret the tone of text messages as an angry message or that something is wrong when the messages do not have the normal, exaggerated text language. This issue is so common that a term has been developed for SMSers who don't use texting language. If there is nothing wrong and the sender typically sends one-word SMS or text messages without text language, they are considered a "dry" texter. Just like most written languages, texts have a small part of their own semantic properties. Every abbreviation and emoticon has some meaning in text messages. Text messages can tell a lot about a person simply by the way they send text messages. As discussed above, texting language shows emotions and personality but also demonstrates different cultures. Just like most things in the world, everything has some sort of culture. For example, fashion has many styles and depends on regional culture. The fashion style in Japan tends to be different than the fashion style here in America. Furthermore, music from all over the world follows different cultures and it is because the unit turns to its own regional culture to survive. Because texting is an unregulated space, people feel comfortable writing whatever they want in any way they want. As a result of this unregulated space, colloquial speech, slang, and code-switching appear in text messages. Text users type the way they speak informally to others because there are no rules or abbreviations. These five elements consist of phonetic contractions, clippings, omissions, substitutions and initializations. Each feature is unique and commonly used when it comes to texting, some more than others, thus developing the written form of texting. Two of the most common elements used are initializations and replacements with symbols and emoticons. With these elements combined and in action, it forms the language of SMS, which serves many purposes other than a written form of communication. It serves as a form of expression of an individual's personality and emotions and simply follows the culture of the spoken language. That said, there is no direct correlation between frequent texting and literacy. The spelling of messages is unique due to the unregulated factor where each individual shapes messages into their own style.
