Living with twelve strangers for an entire year might not sound too appealing to everyone. Yet, for the girls on the first floor of Pulley Resident Hall, every day brings something new and exciting. Being part of this discursive community means that the girls and I share a threshold of belonging, common behaviors, language, goals and beliefs, and a way of communicating. Bonding as a group and getting closer to each other was a challenge at first, but it became easier as common goals and interests emerged. Laughing together, along with laughing at each other, was really the key that brought us together not just as a Pulley Hall floor, but as friends. To become a member of the Pulley Resident Hall, you must be accepted into the University of Southern Mississippi, apply and be accepted for housing, register and choose the residents' preferred hall, floor, room and roommate. Once accepted onto the first floor of Pulley Hall, we must learn to live with another person, or a roommate who has been placed in the same room, who is usually a complete stranger. An extremely important behavior in our plan is respect. Every girl should respect each other and treat each other like a sister or family member. Being quiet and cleaning up is not only respectful, but helps keep our living environment hygienic and tidy. The leader of our first floor in Pulley Hall is our RA, or resident assistant, Mimi. He sets all the rules for our plan and makes sure we follow them. He is responsible for our actions and for punishing us when we make bad choices. Its leader is also our restaurant manager, Gabi. He supervises all the RAs and makes sure they keep their plans on track. In the end…half of the paper…it seems impossible. Comedy is the perfect word to describe the first floor of Pulley Hall. It is our source of fun and entertainment. When we all get together for room meetings, we can't even have a serious conversation and our meetings always seem to drag on because we interrupt and joke around nonstop. I look forward to being in the dorm with all the girls because it always seems to turn even the worst of moods upside down. On the first floor of Pulley Residents Hall, comedy and laughter are our stress reliever and source of daily enjoyment. It's what brought us together as a community and what continues to keep us together. Comedy and laughter describe our room and the many experiences we have had as a floor because we truly appreciate each other's sense of humor. Without it, I don't know how we would get through every single day.
