Throughout the history of the world, oppression has existed side by side with humanity. It is rooted in culture and has become inseparable from human nature, just like war. Like war, humanity struggles against it and aspires to transcend unity among all. The fight against oppression is found in every class, workplace, nation, race, etc. Many individuals have risen from the masses advocating peace for all. They represent those who cannot defend themselves and as a result are responsible for improving the lives of millions of people. It is in their selfless service that positive change occurs. On the other hand, individuals of all classes have risen up advocating hatred and tyranny. They take the side of those who cannot fight for themselves and are only concerned with their own benefit or that of the ruling class. These men and women exploit the fear and naivety of their citizens. As a result, nations are paralyzed and its citizens are left with bloody wounds. Such an extreme is entirely the fault of the citizens themselves for not caring when there were still opportunities for change. It is the citizen's responsibility to actively participate in their government just as it is the government's responsibility to listen to its citizens. Citizens become oppressed when they allow themselves to be disconnected from the political process and do not respond to the actions of their government. As citizens disengage from the governments they empower, governments slowly begin to govern them instead of existing solely to serve. In his commentary piece on “Check Your Privilege 101” from the Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois (TJLP), David Judd explains what is wrong with the current anti-oppression language...... middle of paper. ..... the direction their company takes is responsible.
