One of the issues our society faces is whether to have "uniforms in public schools." The word uniform means "one shape" that makes everyone the same. Some people say yes, some people say no for different reasons. I truly believe that every person has the right to be equal. People shouldn't be judged for what they wear. One reason schools should have uniforms is because it could save families money. The average cost of a JC penny uniform for a student per year is approximately three hundred dollars. A normal family spends five hundred to a thousand dollars on a student's clothing. If public schools had uniforms, students would not feel different, which would help them feel better and concentrate in lessons. If families could save money on clothing, they could spend it on students' other school expenses. School uniforms could last even more than a year. Even if you move out of school uniform, you could pass it on to a younger sibling or cousin. Uniforms help you not buy as many clothes a year. Officials say students feel happier when they don't have to worry about their clothes. This would help students concentrate better in class. Virginia Draa, an assistant professor at Youngstown State University, conducted a survey of uniformed students and non-uniformed students. His results were fascinating, he said while it wasn't much of an academic improvement. But he said there are better attendance, graduation and proficiency rates. It is proven that uniforms not only help with graduation and other grades, but also help in gaining discipline. Having uniforms at school would help students take school more seriously. Students would feel equal in class because there would be no differences in clothing. In doing some research I found that University of Missouri assistant professor David Brunsma said he conducted a survey. That investigation found that the introduction of uniforms worsened academic performance in schools. David tested the school with uniforms for six months and the results said students did better without uniforms. However, this investigation was only conducted in one school. Another 39 Ohio schools say they had better attendance and graduation rates. Uniforms are already taking place in twenty different states and most of them have good opinions.
