Roman architecture implemented many characteristics of ancient Greek architecture. The Romans showed the influence of their engineering skills and centuries-old monuments, while Greek architecture showed the influence of their gods and ideas of physical perfection. While displaying the magnificence of the Greeks and adding their own practicality and creativity, the Romans developed an architectural style that remains to this day. The Greeks used the "post and lintel" system to design a building. It's simply the idea of placing two columns vertically and placing a beam on top of them; a simple and easy assembly, but not durable. The Romans developed new ways to build more efficiently. As the Roman population grew, the buildings used for meetings and markets also had to expand. This presented a problem with the columns. Because the building had to be so large to accommodate the large crowds, more columns were needed to support it. This prompted the Romans to turn to engineers and so the arch was created.
