Thousands of species have become extinct over the years. The snow leopard inhabits the mountains of Central Asia at daily risk of extinction. The snow leopard weighs between 77 and 121 pounds and stands about 24 inches tall at the shoulder. Their thick gray and black fur keeps the leopard warm in the cold mountain climate and helps it blend in with its surroundings. The thickness of their fur changes depending on the season. During the winter and fall their fur is thick and grows to at least 5 inches. During spring and summer their fur is thin. Snow leopards' long, thick tail helps them maintain balance. Their strong chest muscles help them in steep mountain climbs. Their broad, fur-covered feet act as natural snowshoes, preventing them from sinking into the snow. Snow leopards have short, round ears which reduce heat loss. Their noses warm the cold air before it reaches their lungs to help them keep warm.
