The guilt of eating“Innocence is the weakest defense. Innocence has a single voice that can only say again and again, “I didn't do it.” Guilt has a thousand voices, all of them lie.” (Leonard F. Peltier). We all have innocence and wickedness in us. For most, the guilt of having done evil prevents us from doing so, but for some the evil within us takes control. William Golding shows how guilt and innocence are lost when laws are not enforced and there are no longer consequences. In the tragic novel Lord of the Flies, Golding shows how far human will will go when savagery takes over. Simon's place is sacred; sanctuary as a place that once introduced is free from all evil of the outside world. Simon knelt in the forest and “looked into the clearing,” and a warm and peaceful atmosphere was created. All that moved were “a couple of showy butterflies” that seemed to be “dancing” (Golding 74). This is the first time this sacred place is shown in the novel. When the wickedness of the other boys emerges, Simon reappears at this point.
