Religion has been around since the discovery of America. Many European immigrants came to America to escape the traditions of the Church of England. People wanted religious freedom. Most, however, sought to impose their religious beliefs on the people who came to settle in their colonies, creating a divide. It was not until the Great Awakening occurred, which began in the New England colonies, that people rose up and rebelled against the norms of religion and began to worship the way they wanted. This period of division had a great impact on the American colonies by allowing true religious freedom for all people. Before the Great Awakening there was a period called The Enlightenment. During this period, eminent men believed that there was a creator of the world, but they relied on their personal intellect and science to navigate life. They did not feel they needed a creator to “save” them, however, most people were ordinary citizens who wanted an emotional spiritual experience that needed the guidance of a “savior”.
