We live in a generation where news can be spread across America in an instant. This is achieved through television, radio, newspapers, magazines and the Internet, or in other words, the media. However, not everything we see and hear is completely true. With the knowledge that people across the country will be affected, people manipulate the media to persuade the public to have the same point of view as them. The manipulation of the media in America is similar to the manipulation of the media by the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell's 1984. The media is often used to describe people with malicious words, in order to make them look like bad guys. For example, during the Two Minutes of Hate, Emmanuel Goldstein is presented to the Party as "the primordial traitor". (14) The Party wants Goldstein to be hated by everyone, so the media is used to make him out to be a bad guy. Likewise, Edward Snowden is a whistleblower, however, he is instead labeled a traitor in the news.
