He is still fully aware of what is happening and begins to make very astute comparisons between some of the characters and different flowers. Aside from the observation that she is actually in a rather stable mental state, it is very easy to believe that she is overwhelmed by grief. He can't handle all this stress and pain and loss, so he heads to the river and doses the only thing he can think of to remove the pain and kills himself. This death is what ends up causing Hamlet's conflict as mentioned in the previous paragraph and therefore his madness is linked to Hamlet's downfall. We can see that Hamlet was one of the causes of her madness, but it was her fault for being so faithful to her father that she walked away from the man she loves, starting the rejection in the first place. The relationship between Ophelia and Hamlet is shown to have a profound effect on the outcome of the play, causing Hamlet to end up in a fencing match that ends up taking his life. Overall we are able to see that through intentional and involuntary actions Hamlet was greatly influenced by Ophelia. This had many consequences, the biggest of which was an actual confrontation with Laertes and Claudius that led to his death.
