Lies and deception have always played a role in politics throughout human history. These are called conspiracies, which are secret plans by a group to carry out illegal or harmful actions. Scottish history is no exception. The Gowrie Conspiracy shows growing questions and potential answers to King James' use of the army to kill a noble family on the grounds that he had been physically threatened. However, many scholars have formulated theories that are not in line with the king's story. The presence of theories contrary to recorded history portrays a political tendency that suggests the fallibility of the monarchical regime that has the power to abuse military repression, which undermines the legitimacy of authority. Gowrie's conspiracy plays a vital role in questioning the legitimacy of the Divine. Right. The officially recorded story follows the story that was released to the public by King James who claimed that a wealthy family had physically threatened him. According to John A. Wagner's World History: the Modern Era, “In August 1600, the servants of James VI of Scotland (later James I of England) killed the Earl of Gowrie and his brother, supposedly to prevent the two men to carry out a plot to kidnap or assassinate the king. The Gowrie Conspiracy is one of the most mysterious episodes in Scottish history” (Wagner). This story is simply what the king told the public about what happened after he had already used the army to kill the Earl of Gowrie's family. There was no evidence to support his claim, nor were there any witnesses. Since he was in power and was the only one alive who knew what really happened, every word he said had to be believed. The lack of legitimacy behind the monarchy is the government's first flaw... middle of paper... Korea, Germany and China have a history of authoritarian power abusing the military over civilians. These episodes are viewed with shame and leave shipwrecks that needed to be remedied in the long term. Such behaviors only lead to destruction. Politically, the creation of lies to hide a harmful truth was inevitable. The Gowrie conspiracy is just one of many that have raised questions about the government's legitimacy. The king's unquestionable absolute power may have destroyed an innocent family. To keep a just government legitimate, whose power derives from the people, it is imperative to be transparent. Weak lies can never hide the strong truth; it only brings chaos, confusion and mistrust. To take a further step towards an ideal society, transparent democratic governance is essential.
