Topic > What is Asperger's syndrome? - 2757

Many people around the world are unfamiliar with the disorders associated with autism. Some people don't even know what autism really is. Asperger syndrome is one perplexing disorder, among countless, that must be recognized. Although it is one of the best-known disorders, the understanding of Asperger syndrome is far from common knowledge. There are many misconceptions and people who don't know what Asperger's syndrome really is. Being uncertain about the characteristics of a person with Asperger's allows people to go through life without understanding the disorder itself and the people affected by it. Asperger syndrome is one of many disorders on the autism spectrum. The autism spectrum includes early childhood autism, childhood autism, Kanner autism, high-functioning autism, atypical autism, pervasive developmental disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and Asperger syndrome (“American Psychiatric Association”, 2013). All disorders found on the spectrum are neurodevelopmental disorders. These types of disorders involve disorders of the development and growth of the brain and nervous system (Lord & Bishop, 2010). Each disorder found on the spectrum may have similarities, but they are also different from each other. Asperger syndrome was not part of the autism spectrum until the last update of the DSM-5 in 2013. It was classified as a category of its own, but is now an autism spectrum disorder, or ASD (Macintosh & Dissanayake, 2004). The shift of Asperger syndrome into the autism spectrum occurred due to various similarities with ASDs. Hans Asperger was the first to describe Asperger syndrome, also known as AS, in 1944. He explained that AS causes clumsiness, poor motor skills, and the inability to walk or run smoothly (Miyahara, Tsujii, ... mid-article. .....ih.gov/disorders/asperger/detail_asperger.htmPolimeni, M.A., Richdale, A.L., & Francis, A.J.P.
