In every historical period, a woman's role in society has always been defined through her actions and ability to follow the ideal values ​​of her tradition of that time . However, two of the greatest Hindu epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, reveal two significantly different women, each representing the “ideal woman” of a different era. Sita, wife of Lord Rama, accepts harsh treatment and humiliation as a society woman while remaining absolutely faithful and honest. Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas, instead challenges the male gender and rebels against any mortification. Throughout Indian literature, the gender divide presents these two bold iconic figures in different ways as some might say Sita represents the ancient times and Draupadi represents the more modern times. Sita demonstrates a more conservative ideal woman while Draupadi portrays the stronger and more modern woman of today. Both women, being victims and acceptors of their fate, take on their contrasting roles as women who introduced a new perspective to the woman of power and continue to influence the Hindu woman of the present time. Women, not only in India but across the world, have in recent years gained enough power to raise their voices and become independent. When discussing the status and role of a Hindu woman in society, one can conclude that until recently women were burdened and repressed by patriarchal and marital power. “The society described in doctrinaire literature reflects a strong patriarchal value system and a strict code of conduct for women.” A society expects a lot from its women and imposes inviolable rules, which entail unbearable consequences that both the family and the individual woman would have to face if... middle of paper... yes. They were able to portray the idealistic characteristics that women of two different generations have embraced to be a respected woman in society. Sita, an extraordinary wife, willing to suffer for all the consequences and humiliations that her husband imposes on her, exemplifies and demonstrates the behaviors of women who were bound by rigid rules and were not allowed to take a stand on many issues. In contrast, Draupadi, a courageous woman on the whole, but also very loving and faithful to her husbands, is able to fight for her rights and also wholeheartedly fulfill the duty of a wife, which is the role that many Hindu women hiring today. With society and gender differences constantly changing, women are moving forward as a whole acquiring the characteristics of both of these iconic figures; to be simple and humble like Sita, but at the same time bold and demanding.
