Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher who lived from 469 to 399 BC Much of what he knew he learned from another famous ancient Greek philosopher, Plato. Regarding logic and human behavior in general, “Socrates' life was inspired by discussion and debate both with the youth of Athens and with the leading philosophers of his time” (Daintith, Vol. 9 93). He introduced methodical and orderly thinking. Socrates is reported to have said: "It seemed to me a superlative thing to know the explanation of everything, why it comes into existence, why it perishes and why it is" (Daintith, Vol. 9 93). This sums up what he has tried to discover and understand throughout his life. Socrates is a true example of philosophers and scientists of the ancient Greek era. Like many others of his time, he sought to understand the universe, why it exists and how it came into being. The great philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC) was another of the many amazing thinkers of ancient Greece, including Plato and Socrates. “The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle possessed an exceptional intellect. His writings, from politics to zoology, encompassed all branches of human knowledge. Although his ideals have not always stood the test of time, Aristotle's approach has had a profound influence on subsequent Western and Islamic thought and science.” (Allaby 6)He was also a tutor to Alexander the Great. Like most other scientists and philosophers of his time, Aristotle was primarily interested in logic and the origins of the universe. He was also very interested in politics and economics and how the world was run and kept in order over the centuries. “Aristotle considered man to be the most important being in the universe” (Frank 16). We have much to thank the many scientists and philosophers over the centuries, including surviving and improving the health and knowledge we now possess in our society.
