The film On Golden Pond is a depiction of the different psychosocial stages that society goes through as people age. In the film, various characters face particular crises when they reach a psychosocial stage, which brings tension to the film. Throughout the film each character goes through different life challenges such as cognitive and psychosocial developments, which will lead to a greater appreciation of each character's life. Eric Erikson developed eight different psychosocial stages that emphasize lifespan development during major periods of life. The first psychosocial stage is infancy and spans the age from birth to one year of age. The childhood crisis is trust versus mistrust and highlights that if you take care of children; they will be able to gain security and confidence. On the other hand, if they develop distrust, they will develop a sense of insecurity. Erickson's second phase is childhood, which spans the age of one to three years and addresses the crisis phase of autonomy with respect to shame and doubt. In the early childhood stage, children are able to use mental skills and begin to make decisions for themselves. The third phase is early childhood and spans the age from three to six years with the phase of crisis of initiative with respect to the sense of guilt. During the early childhood stage, children are able to acquire the characteristics of ambition and responsibility and develop through parental support. On the other hand, if parents are too demanding, children will develop feelings of guilt. The next stage is middle adulthood, which ranges from six to eleven; children are able to develop the characteristic cooperation, but inferiority can also arise with negative experiences which can cause an industry phase crisis compared to... middle of paper ......and integrity crisis compared to desperation, however, the two characters had different characteristics that classified them in different extremes of the crisis. Throughout the film, the audience is able to visualize what types of problems are faced and what types of problems the characters had to face in order to resolve their crisis. Chelsea also had different problems than Billy for this reason; everyone was facing a different phase and crisis. Personally this film gave me a great understanding of human development; I was able to understand why each person performs a certain action: for example, my sister is disrespectful and immature because she is facing the adolescence phase and the identity/role confusion phase. I also learned that a crisis can really affect a person in a negative way; if the person is not able to fully face their crisis.
