Anyone can get scoliosis. “The most common type is idiopathic scoliosis in children ages 10 to 12 and early adolescence (scoliosis sufferers, 2009).” Girls are more likely to get this type of scoliosis than boys. (Who has scoliosis, 2009). Scoliosis was thought to have been discovered in the time of Socrates by a Greek physician Hippocrates. He was known as the "father of medicine" where he not only discovered scoliosis, but also suggested scoliosis treatments, a contraption similar to the back brace used today. (Scoliosis, 2014). Idiopathic scoliosis is an unknown cause, meaning that in approximately eighty percent of cases the scoliosis is unknown. Some causes of scoliosis could be neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Then there is the congenital scoliosis that was present at the time of birth. Scoliosis is also known to be a genetic disease. If you have one leg longer than the other you run the risk of developing scoliosis. Other causes are: bad posture, use of backpacks or briefcases, physical exercise. (What causes scoliosis, 2014). “Children and adolescents often have no or no symptoms until the curve of the spine becomes moderate to severe (Symptoms of Scoliosis, 2014).” Symptoms in a child with scoliosis are that one shoulder appears higher than the other, the ribs are higher on one side when the child bends from the waist, and the waist may be flat on one side.
